Convertible Top - Convertible Top Focus 2004.75 (07/2004-)
Description and Operation

Convertible Top Assembly System Overview

The convertible top has a retractable steel roof panel and rear window panel. The convertible top is hydraulically operated and electronically controlled. The system consists of two linked systems, one operating the convertible top and one the luggage compartment lid.

There is a luggage compartment cover in the luggage compartment which will protect the luggage and convertible top panels when the convertible top is opened. When separated, the upper section stores the convertible top when it is fully retracted, and the lower section stores luggage. When the luggage compartment cover is fully deployed it shows the maximum height of the luggage allowed when the convertible top is stowed. The luggage compartment cover is a manually operated roller cover.

The convertible top will only open when the luggage compartment cover is in the fully deployed position and the ignition switch in position II. The convertible top switch must be pressed and held until the convertible top is fully open. The luggage compartment lid will automatically elevate and move rearwards. The convertible top roof panels will fold together and lower into the luggage compartment. The rear window panel is rotated rearwards and is located on stay pads above the luggage compartment cover, the front panel folds into the rear panel facing upwards.

The luggage compartment lid and convertible top compartment lid then close in a concurrent operation.

When the convertible top is opened, hydraulic pressure will remain for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes hydraulic pressure will dissipate and the convertible top assembly will move. Therefore, make sure the special tool (501-124 holding tool, roof), is installed immediately.

Convertible Top Manual Opening and Closing

The convertible top can be opened or closed manually but this must only be done if the normal function has failed. To lower the convertible top manually, make sure that the ignition switch is in the OFF position and that the ignition key removed. Release the luggage compartment lid latch and the front latches.

It will require at least two technicians per side to make sure that equal pressure is applied to both sides of the convertible top during both opening and closing.

When the convertible top is opened, hydraulic pressure will remain for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes hydraulic pressure will dissipate and the convertible top assembly will move. Therefore, make sure the special tool (501-124 holding tool, roof), is installed immediately.

All hydraulic cylinders are dual-acting. The hydraulic hoses are attached to the cylinders and the convertible top hydraulic pump with quick-release couplings.

The hydraulic pressure used to actuate the cylinders is produced by the hydraulic pump, which is driven by an integrated electric motor. The convertible top module electronically controls the hydraulic valves with signals returned by the Hall sensors.

When servicing a convertible top hydraulic component, allow hydraulic pressure to dissipate. Hydraulic pressure will dissipate after 10 minutes.
