Oil Filter: Service and Repair

Oil Filter Element 

Material

Removal
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. If equipped, remove the 2 screws and the oil filter access cover.

3. Loosen the oil filter drain plug.
4. Using a cup-style oil filter wrench, loosen the oil filter cover one turn.
5. Remove the oil filter drain plug and drain the engine oil from the oil filter and adapter.

Remove and discard the oil filter drain plug O-ring seal.

6. Remove the oil filter cover and oil filter element.

Discard the oil filter element.

Remove and discard the oil filter cover O-ring seal.

Installation
1. Wipe clean the oil filter cover and mounting surface on the oil filter adapter.

2. NOTE:  Lubricate the oil filter cover O-ring seal with clean engine oil.

Install a new oil filter cover O-ring seal.

3. CAUTION:  Do not over tighten the oil filter cover. Over tightening the oil filter cover may damage the cover or O-ring seal and result in an oil

leak.

Install a new oil filter element and the oil filter cover.

Using a cup-style oil filter wrench, tighten to 33 Nm (24 ft. lbs.).

4. NOTE:  Lubricate the oil filter drain plug O-ring seal with clean engine oil.

Install a new oil filter drain plug O-ring seal.

5. CAUTION:  Do not over tighten the oil filter drain plug. Over tightening the oil filter drain plug may damage the drain plug, O-ring seal or cover

and result in an oil leak.

Install the oil filter drain plug.

Tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
