Removal and Installation

Special Tool(s)

Separator, Ball Joint

General Equipment
Transmission Jack

Removal

All vehicles

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure the road wheels are in the straight ahead position.
    Centralize the steering wheel and lock it in position.

  1. Detach the carpet from the floor.

  1. Disconnect the steering column shaft from the steering gear pinion.
    • Discard the nut.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section  100-02 Jacking and Lifting.

  1. Remove the engine undershield.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Leave the tie-rod end retaining nuts in place to protect the ball joint studs. (wheel removed for clarity).
    Loosen the tie-rod end retaining nuts.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Protect the ball joint seals with a soft cloth to prevent damage.
    Using the special tool, detach the tie-rod ends from the wheel knuckles.
    1. Release the tie-rod ends.
    1. Remove and discard the tie-rod end retaining nuts.

  1. Remove the engine support insulator center bolt.
Vehicles with 2.3L engine

  1. Remove the engine support insulator center bolt.
All vehicles

  1. Detach the exhaust hanger insulators from the front crossmember.

  1. Loosen the steering gear mounting bolts.
  1. Using a suitable transmission jack support the front crossmember.

  1. Lower the front crossmember to gain access to the steering gear.
    1. Remove the front crossmember retaining bolts.
    1. Lower the front crossmember.
Vehicles with 2.8L engine

  1. Remove the exhaust heat shield.
All vehicles

  1. Disconnect the power steering lines from the power steering gear.
    • Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.
Right-hand drive vehicles

  1. Detach the power steering gear return line from the power steering gear.
All vehicles

  1. Remove the steering gear retaining bolts.
  1. Remove the steering gear from the front crossmember.

  1. Remove the steering gear to bulkhead seal.

Installation

All vehicles

  1. Install the steering gear to bulkhead seal.

  1. Install the steering gear.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Install new O-rings to the power steering lines.
    Connect the power steering lines to the power steering gear.
Right-hand drive vehicles

  1. Connect the power steering gear return line to the power steering gear.
Vehicles with 2.8L engine

  1. Install the exhaust heat shield.
All vehicles

  1. Install the front crossmember.

  1. Install the engine support insulator center bolt.
Vehicles with 2.3L engine

  1. Install the engine support insulator center bolt.
All vehicles

  1. Attach the exhaust hanger insulators to the crossmember.

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Install new tie-rod end retaining nuts. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
    Install the tie-rod ends to the wheel knuckles.

  1. Install the engine undershield.
  1. Lower the vehicle.

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Install a new steering column shaft to steering gear pinion locknut. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure the wheel hubs are in the straight ahead position.
    Connect the steering column shaft to the steering gear pinion.

  1. Attach the carpet.
  1. Fill and bleed the power steering system. For additional information, refer to Section  211-00 Steering System - General Information.
  1. Adjust the front wheel alignment. For additional information, refer to Section  202-04 .
