Diagnosis and Testing Refer to Wiring Diagrams Section 419-07, for schematic and connector information. Inspection and Verification - Verify the customer concern.
- Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.
Visual Inspection Chart Mechanical | Electrical | - Global positioning system (GPS) antenna
| - Fuse(s)
- Wiring harness
- Electrical connector(s)
- Navigation system display module
| - If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
- If the concern is not visually evident, verify the symptom and refer to the Symptom Chart.
Symptom Chart Symptom Chart Symptom | Possible Sources | Action | Navigation system does not operate but radio does | * Incorrectly installed CD ROM. | * Install the CD ROM correctly. | Navigation system will not switch on | * Circuit(s). * Navigation system display module. | * | Navigation system not operating correctly | * Navigation system display module. * Reversing lamp(s). * GPS antenna signal. | * | * Wheel speed sensor. | NOTE:The following step requires the vehicle wheels to rotate freely. * Using WDS oscilloscope, measure wheel speed sensor frequency between the navigation system display module C74 pin 5, (GN/WH), and pin 18, (BU/WH), harness side and ground. * Is the pattern indicated on the oscilloscope a square wave that changes frequency with a corresponding change in wheel speed rotation? * If the pattern changes, INSTALL a new navigation system display module. REFER to: Navigation System Display Module (419-07A Navigation System - Vehicles With: Radio Navigation System (RNS) 1, Removal and Installation). TEST the system for normal operation. * If the pattern does not change, CHECK and REPAIR the circuit(s). TEST the system for normal operation. If the circuit(s) are OK, REFER to: Anti-Lock Control (206-09A Anti-Lock Control, Diagnosis and Testing). to continue diagnosis. | Pinpoint Tests NOTE:Use a digital multimeter for all electrical measurements. PINPOINT TEST A : NAVIGATION SYSTEM WILL NOT SWITCH ON | TEST CONDITIONS | DETAILS/RESULTS/ACTIONS | A1: CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO NAVIGATION SYSTEM DISPLAY MODULE | | 1 Disconnect Navigation System Display Module C205. | | 2 Ignition switch in position II. | | 3 Measure the voltage between the navigation system display module C205 pin 4, (BN/RD), harness side and ground; and between the navigation system display module C205 pin 7, (RD), harness side and ground. | | Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes No REPAIR circuit (BN/RD) or circuit (RD) as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation. | A2: CHECK THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM DISPLAY MODULE FOR GROUND | | 1 Ignition switch in position 0. | | 2 Measure the resistance between the navigation system display module C205 pin 8, (BN), harness side and ground. | | Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes INSTALL a new navigation system display module. REFER to: Navigation System Display Module (419-07A Navigation System - Vehicles With: Radio Navigation System (RNS) 1, Removal and Installation). TEST the system for normal operation. No REPAIR the circuit (BN). TEST the system for normal operation. | PINPOINT TEST B : NAVIGATION SYSTEM NOT OPERATING CORRECTLY | TEST CONDITIONS | DETAILS/RESULTS/ACTIONS | B1: CHECK THE DISPLAY COLOR OF THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM | | 1 Check the navigation system display module to see if the display is colored or monochrome. | | Does the navigation system have a monochrome display? Yes No | B2: CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM DISPLAY MODULE | | 1 Disconnect Navigation System Display Module C74. | | 2 Ignition switch in position II. | | 3 Measure the voltage between the navigation system display module C74 pin 4, (BK), harness side and ground. | | Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes No REPAIR the circuit (BK). TEST the system for normal operation. | B3: CHECK REVERSE SIGNAL FOR VOLTAGE | | 1 Select reverse gear. | | 2 Measure the voltage between the navigation system display module C74 pin 17, (BK/RD), harness side and ground. | | Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes No REPAIR the circuit (BK/RD). TEST the system for normal operation. If the concern persists, REFER to: Reversing Lamps - Vehicles Built Up To: 12/2001 (417-01 Exterior Lighting, Diagnosis and Testing) / Reversing Lamps - Vehicles Built From: 01/2002 (417-01 Exterior Lighting, Diagnosis and Testing). | B4: CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM DISPLAY MODULE | | 1 Disconnect Navigation System Display Module C75. | | 2 Ignition switch in position II. | | 3 Measure the voltage between the navigation system display module C75 pin 8, (BK), harness side and ground. | | Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes No REPAIR the circuit (BK). TEST the system for normal operation. | B5: CHECK REVERSE SIGNAL FOR VOLTAGE | | 1 Select reverse gear. | | 2 Measure the voltage between the navigation system display module C75 pin 10, (BK/RD), harness side and ground. | B6: CHECK THE GPS ANTENNA CABLE FOR OPEN | | 1 Disconnect Antenna Cable. | | 2 Measure the resistance between the antenna cable center conductor and the outer shield. | | Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
