FORD:

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1984-91 GRAND MARQUIS
ISSUE:
A lack of heat or coolant leakage from the heater inlet hose union may be caused by poor cooling system maintenance.
ACTION:
Replace the heater inlet hose, union and hose assembly with a one-piece hose (E7AZ-18472-A). Check the coolant and cooling system by
using the following service procedure.
HEATER INLET HOSE INSTALLATION
1.
Remove the heater inlet hose, union and hose assembly. Refer to the appropriate model year Service Manual.
2.
Install the new one-piece hose (E7AZ-18472-A).
3.
Operate the heating system to be sure there are no leaks.
CHECKING ENGINE COOLANT
A car's coolant prevents the engine from overheating in the summer and protects it from freezing in the winter. The coolant level should be checked at
least once a month. The coolant additives protect the entire cooling system from internal rust. These additives also provide lubrication for the water
pump.
Keep the following items in mind when servicing the coolant system.
^
During severe duty use, such as police cars, taxis or delivery service, the coolant should be changed every 24,000 miles (38400 km).
^
Engine coolant should be added only to the recovery reservoir - not to the radiator. The coolant added should be a 50/50 mixture of water and
the type of engine coolant specified by the Ford Motor Company.
^
A coolant mixture that has less than 40% of the specified engine coolant can cause rusting of internal coolant passages restricting coolant
flow which can result in engine overheating.
^
A coolant mixture that has more than 65% of the specified engine coolant can cause an engine to overheat in warm (over 80~ F, 27~ C)
weather.
^
Water only may be added to the coolant, but only in an emergency. It should be replaced with the proper coolant mixture as soon as possible.
^
Use Ford Cooling System Fluid (E2FZ-19549-AA), or an equivalent engine coolant that meets Ford Specification ESE-M97B44-A (in
Canada, Motorcraft CXC-8-B).
^
Do not use alcohol or methanol antifreeze and do not mix them with the proper coolant. If the proper coolant is not used, the aluminum
radiator may corrode.
^
Refer to the appropriate Car Service Manual for the procedures for checking coolant system hoses and draining/flushing the coolant system.
