Spark knock and/or detonation in subject vehicles may be corrected by retarding the initial timing as follows:
1.
Check initial ignition timing to be sure it is to the specification on the Vehicle Emission Decal.
2.
Check to be sure all vacuum lines are connected and seated and they are not kinked, cracked or broken.
3.
Vehicles with AOD and dual mode ignition systems. Check operation of ignition timing vacuum switch (12A265) as follows:
a. Check ignition timing with vacuum switch fully connected - both electrically and to the vacuum supply.
b. Recheck ignition timing with the vacuum line removed from the switch. If the timing is not retarded 2-4° the switch is inoperative and must be
replaced.
4.
Check to be sure the EGR valve is functional per Section 29-15 of the Car Shop Manual.
5.
Test vehicle to determine if detonation is eliminated.
6.
Retard the ignition timing in 2° increments to a maximum of 6° from the specification on the Vehicle Emission Decal. Refer to Car Shop Manual,
Section 29-02.
NOTE:
Light detonation during a heavy crowd drive mode is acceptable.
7.
Check idle speeds. Reset as required.
