Removal and Installation

Removal

All Vehicles

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Use an Allen key to stop the piston rod from turning.
    Slacken the left-hand suspension strut nut by five turns (right-hand side shown).

  1. Slacken the hub nut and front left-hand wheel nuts (right side shown).
  1. Raise the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section  100-02 Jacking and Lifting.
  1. Detach the left-hand front wheel and unscrew the halfshaft stub nut.
Diesel-engined vehicles

  1. Detach engine undershield.
All vehicles

  1. Remove the wheelhouse cover (right-hand side shown).

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The inner tripode joint must not be bent at more than 18°; the outer tripode joint must not be bent at more than 45°.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the boot and the ABS sensor ring.
    Detach the lower suspension arm from the spindle carrier.
Vehicles with manual transmission

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the oil seal.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Only when the right-hand front drive halfshaft has been removed.
    Free the left-hand front drive halfshaft.
    • Refer to later step.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the oil seal.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The inner tripode joint must not be bent at more than 18°; the outer tripode joint must not be bent at more than 45°.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Escaping oil. Close off the transmission with auxiliary plugs.
    Remove the left-hand front drive halfshaft (MTX transmission shown).

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The inner tripode joint must not be bent at more than 18°; the outer tripode joint must not be bent at more than 45°.
    Press the front halfshaft from the wheel hub using a commercially available two-legged puller .

Installation

All Vehicles
  1. General note.
    • Renew self-locking nuts and snap-rings.

  1. Installation position - front halfshaft.
    • Remove oil seal fitting sleeve after inserting the front halfshaft.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The inner tripode joint must not be bent at more than 18°; the outer tripode joint must not be bent at more than 45°.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the front drive halfshaft oil seal.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The snap-ring must engage.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Use a new snap-ring.
    Install the left front drive halfshaft (vehicle with automatic transmission shown).
    • Install the radial oil seal installation sleeve.
  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:The snap-ring must engage.
    Press the front drive halfshaft fully into the transmission.

  1. Insert the halfshaft stub into the wheel hub.
  1. Screw on the hub nut.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the boots and the ABS sensor ring.
    Attach the left-hand suspension arm.

  1. Install the wheelhouse cover (right-hand side shown).
  1. Install left-hand front wheel.
Vehicles with manual transmission
  1. Check the level of the transmission fluid and top up with transmission fluid if necessary. For additional information, refer to Section  308-03 Manual Transmission/Transaxle.
Diesel-engined vehicles

  1. Install the engine undershield.
All vehicles
  1. Lower the vehicle.

  1. Tighten the stub axle nut and the wheel nuts on the left-hand front wheel (right-hand side shown).
    1. Wheel nut
    1. Hub nut

  1. Tighten the left-hand suspension strut nut (right-hand side shown).
    • Stop it from turning using an Allen key.
    • Tighten by hand with a ring spanner.
    • Use a torque wrench to tighten to torque.
Vehicles with automatic transmission
  1. Check the fluid level in the automatic transmission and if necessary top up with automatic transmission fluid . For additional information, refer to Section  307-01 Automatic Transmission/Transaxle.
All vehicles
  1. Standard finishing operations.
    • Carry out road test.
