Steering column assembly
Steering Column
The steering system consists of a steering wheel that encases the airbag module. The steering wheel is attached to the steering column assembly with a single retaining bolt.
Attached to the steering column assembly are the following:
- Multifunction switch
- Windshield wiper switch
- Ignition switch
- Ignition switch lock cylinder
Steering gear
The power assisted steering gear is of the conventional rack and pinion type. There are two steering gears used:
- 68.8 mm rack travel for 205 55 R15 tires.
- 73.3 mm rack travel for all other tires.
The steering gear is mounted on the front subframe assembly.
The steering gear pinion is connected to the steering column through a flexible coupling. The coupling is fixed to the pinion with a pinch bolt and to the column with a clamp plate and bolt.
Power steering pump
Hydraulic fluid under pressure is supplied to the steering gear by a hydraulic pump. The pump has a remote reservoir which is attached to the suspension leg turret at the upper right-hand corner of the engine compartment.
