In addition to the familiar Zetec and Duratec VE engines, the Mondeo will also be offered with the latest generation diesel engine.
This 66kW (90HP) diesel engine with intercooling and indirect fuel injection is based on the familiar swirl chamber diesel engine which has been revised in line with the latest technology.
The engine not only conforms to the 94/12/EG (1996 emissions standard), but also meets all the other expectations of a latest generation engine in relation to fuel consumption, quiet running, flexibility and power delivery.
The exhaust manifold and the turbocharger on these turbocharged vehicles are combined in one unit.
The crankshaft has five bearings and has thrust half-rings on the third main bearing, which determine the end play on the crankshaft.
The timing pulleys which drive the valve train and the injection pump are supported in sliding bearings on the crankshaft. They are held in position only by the clamping pressure exerted by the centre bolt.
To enable clear positioning, the injection pump timing pulley has a roll pin which centres itself in the crankshaft and the camshaft timing pulley. The front timing pulley contains an O-ring which must be renewed and coated with engine oil each time refitting takes place.
Crankshaft centre bolt
The crankshaft centre bolt must be renewed each time after it is undone (torque to yield bolt).
Timing belt drive
Driven by the crankshaft, the cambelt transfers the control motion to the overhead camshaft.
CAUTION:Always follow the adjusting instructions as new timing belts sag a great deal when first installed.
An automatic belt tensioner keeps the timing belt drive tensioned. The timing belt is initially tensioned using the adjuster.
The cambelt pulley is held on the camshaft by means of taper seat. The necessary frictional force is applied on the camshaft by means of a centre bolt.
Valve tappet, adjusting shims
CAUTION:Removing the support ring too early causes the oil seal to contract, rendering it unusable.
Both the front and the rear oil seals are made from PTFE and must be fitted dry, i.e. without using oil.
When supplied as spares, both oils seals have a support ring which may only be removed once the seal has been fitted or which falls out of the oil seal of its own accord.
