Fuel Tank and Lines - Fuel Tank and Lines Mondeo 1997 (08/1996-09/2000)
Description and Operation

The system comprises:

Fuel Tank

The fuel tank is mounted under the rear of the vehicle just forward of the centre line of the rear suspension.

The fuel tank filler pipe is fitted on the right-hand side of the vehicle. It is equipped with a restrictor plate to prevent other than unleaded fuel pump nozzles from being inserted into the filler pipe.

Fuel Filter

The fuel filter is mounted under the vehicle on the forward face of the fuel tank. The filter should be renewed every 30.000 km, 20.000 miles or every 18 months.

Fuel Pump

The fuel pump is an electric centrifugal type mounted as an assembly with the fuel tank sender unit. The pump is fitted with a fine nylon filter to prevent dirt being drawn into the system from the tank.

Fuel Tank Sender Unit

The sender unit is a conventional float operated, variable resistor type and is mounted as an assembly with the fuel pump.

Fuel Shut-off Switch

This cuts off the electrical supply to the fuel pump in the event of an accident and is located in the left-hand footwell behind the kick panel trim.

Roll-Over Valve

Two roll-over valves are fitted in the fuel tank vent/emission system to prevent fuel leaking from the tank in the event of the vehicle becoming inverted.

The Fuel Filler Cap

This is a screw type cap fitted with a one-way vent valve to admit air only, a slight vacuum is maintained in the tank to prevent the emission of vapours to the atmosphere.

Fuel Lines

The fuel lines are metal with flexible connections. The connectors are of the quick release type.
