Description of the individual components
The powertrain control module (PCM) controls all functions related to the engine. The PCM is connected to the data link connector (DLC) via the diagnostic data bus (SCP). Data stored in the PCM can be read out via the data link connector (DLC) using diagnostic tester FDS2000 or NGS.
The data link connector (DLC) acts as an interface between the modules and the diagnostic tester. All modules that can be diagnosed are linked to this connector via diagnostic databuses (SCP or ISO9141).
The anti-theft/double locking module incorporates the following functions:
Central locking
Double locking
Remote infra-red control
Infra-red interior monitoring
Anti-theft system
The Mecatronic 3 ABS module controls the anti-lock braking via the brake circuits. The Mecatronic 3 ABS module with TCS also controls the traction control system via the throttle valve. The Bosch ABS module controls the anti-lock braking, the traction control system and the electronic brake power distribution via the brake circuits. Depending on trim level the vehicle is equipped with either the Mecatronic 3 ABS module with or without TCS, or the Bosch ABS module. The corresponding modules are connected to the data link connector (DLC) via the diagnostic databus (ISO9141).
The additional heater is a fuel-fired heating system which, when the ambient temperature is low, heats up the coolant in the cooling system. The additional heater is connected to the data link connector (DLC) via the diagnostic databus (ISO 9141).
The diagnostic databus (SCP) consists of two cables, 4-PB9 (GY/VT) and 5-PB9 (BU/WH). Communications to the diagnostic tester are still maintained if one of the two cables is interrupted or shorted to ground/battery voltage. If one of these errors is present it is stored and can be read out. If both cables are damaged then no communications to modules are possible.
The diagnostic databus (ISO9141) is an 8-PB9 (GY) single-core cable, along which no communication is possible once the cable has been broken, there is ground contact or a short-circuit to a battery voltage occurs.
