Navigation module

The navigation system consists of a navigation module (incorporating a gyroscope), antenna, radio navigation unit and a unique (optional) CD autochanger. The function of the navigation system is to provide the driver with direction information to a pre - programmed destination.

The system uses Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites, gyroscopic movement and an ABS wheel sensor to track the location of the vehicle against a digital map, in the form of a CD ROM that is inserted into the navigation module. Direction information is provided to the driver in the form of a visual instruction on the radio navigation unit LCD display and a verbal instruction over the audio speakers.

Destination information is inputted by the driver using buttons on the radio navigation unit that access a menu procedure. This input can only be entered while the vehicle is stationary.

Antenna

The antenna is used to gather location information from the GPS satellites. In order to obtain the most accurate location data, a minimum of four satellites are required to be visible to the antenna at any one time.

The antenna is located under the air cowl panel on the passenger side of the vehicle.

Gyroscope

The gyroscope is mounted within the navigation module and cannot be changed separately. This measures actual vehicle movements.

Navigation Module

The navigation module has three main functions:

  1. To monitor, maintain and manage the inputs from the antenna, gyroscope and ABS module. These three inputs are used by the navigation module to compare against the CD ROM to locate the actual vehicle position. The system is constantly checking its location while driving, to make minor adjustments as necessary.
  1. To act as the system interface with the driver display and inputs from the (radio navigation unit). It also acts as storage and access to the information required by the system, the digital map, voice information and operating data.
  1. To provide the test, calibration and fault diagnosis procedures. The module is able to check and identify faults in the system and display these as a specific code to aid repair and maintenance.

The navigation module is located under the passenger front seat.

Radio Navigation Unit

The radio navigation unit operates as a radio, cassette player and CD player (if the CD autochanger is fitted), even when navigation is selected. When navigation is selected the radio navigation unit acts as the driver interface, having extra functionality that allows the driver to input his required destination, via a menu and provides direction information both visually and audibly. For a detailed description and operation, refer to the Owner Guide, Navigation System.

ABS Module

The ABS module provides information to the navigation module to allow the system to determine distance covered. The input is generated from the left - hand rear ABS wheel sensor of the vehicle. The signal is processed by the ABS module and passed to the navigation module in the form of a pulsed input.

Audio CD Autochanger (optional)

NOTE:
NOTE:The standard Ford unit is not compatible for use with the navigation system.

A unique audio CD autochanger is located in the load space of the vehicle, and is mounted vertically in the wagon variants and horizontally in the saloon and hatchback variants.
