Removal and Installation

Retractor, Rear Brake Caliper Piston

Removal

All vehicles
CAUTION:
CAUTION:If brake fluid is spilt on the paintwork, the affected area must be immediately washed down with cold water.
  1. Remove the wheel and tire.
    For additional information, refer to: Wheel and Tire (204-04 Wheels and Tires, Removal and Installation).

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Suspend the brake caliper to prevent load being placed on the brake hose.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Make a note of the position of the parking brake cable, to aid installation.
    Detach the brake caliper from the brake caliper anchor plate.
4-door and 5-door

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:To retract the left-hand side brake caliper piston, apply pressure to, and rotate the brake caliper piston clockwise.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:To retract the right-hand side brake caliper piston, apply pressure to, and rotate the brake caliper piston counterclockwise.
    Using the special tool, retract the brake caliper piston.
Wagon
  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:To retract the left-hand side brake caliper piston, apply pressure to, and rotate the brake caliper piston counterclockwise.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:To retract the right-hand side brake caliper piston, apply pressure to, and rotate the brake caliper piston clockwise.
    Using the special tool, retract the brake caliper piston.
All vehicles

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure that the indents in the brake caliper pistons align with the brake pad locating pins.
    Centralize the brake caliper pistons.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Make a note of the position of the brake pads to aid installation.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:The inner brake pad has a chamfered leading edge and the outer brake pad has a shim.
    Remove the brake pads.

  1. Remove the brake caliper anchor plate.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Make a note of the position of the brake pad locating springs to aid installation.
    Remove the brake pad locating springs.

Installation

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure that the brake pad locating springs extended tangs are facing away from the brake disc.
    Install the brake pad locating springs.

  1. Install the brake caliper anchor plate.

  1. Remove the adhesive foil from the rear of the outer brake pad.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure that the brake pads are installed with the arrows pointing in the forward direction of rotation.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:The inner brake pad has a chamfered leading edge and the outer brake pad has a shim.
    Install the brake pads.
    • Resting the brake pad on the brake pad locating spring extended tang, push down on, and rotate the brake pad. Slide the brake pad into the brake caliper anchor plate.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure the that parking brake cable is correctly attached to the brake caliper.
    Attach the brake caliper to the brake caliper anchor plate.
  1. Install the wheel and tire.
    For additional information, refer to: Wheel and Tire (204-04 Wheels and Tires, Removal and Installation).
  1. Fully depress and release the brake pedal.
  1. Check the fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir and top up if necessary with brake fluid.
