The Mondeo 2001 has been equipped with electronic EBA in conjunction with the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) as standard since 03.02.2003 (build code 3K) .

Similarly to the mechanical Emergency Brake Assist EBA, this system recognises an emergency braking manoeuvre from the rate at which the brake pedal is depressed and then automatically provides maximum braking power until the brake pedal is no longer pressed. This can reduce the braking distance in critical situations.

Vehicles without ESP are still equipped with the mechanical EBA (refer to TSB 9/2002 for further information).

NOTE:
NOTE:In critical situations, the EBA can provide the driver with valuable assistance, but it cannot take the place of due care and attention and is not a substitute for responsible driving.

In addition to the standard brake master cylinder with brake booster, the system only utilises existing components of the ESP system together with the signals from existing sensors. It is integrated in the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)/ESP module.

    Activation of the system occurs when the following three conditions are satisfied:

  • the vehicle speed is greater than 5 km/h,
  • the braking pressure is at least 30 bar,
  • the rate of increase in the braking pressure is 2500 bar/sec.

The braking pressure and its rate of increase are measured by the brake pressure sensor of the ESP.

In contrast to the mechanical EBA, there is no noticeable change in the feel or travel of the brake pedal after activation of the electronic EBA.

The braking assistance is achieved by a pressure increase created by the ESP return pump until the wheel locking limit (ABS control) is reached.

The electronic EBA is deactivated if the driver reduces the braking pressure after activation of the EBA. The braking pressure is then increased/decreased again as a proportional function of the pedal force.

The electronic EBA is always switched on, even if the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) has been deactivated.

WARNING:Never mix up components from systems with or without EBA or from mechanical/electronic EBA systems. Failure to follow these instructions can lead to personal injury and material damage.

On vehicles with Electronic Stability Program (ESP), it is only possible to determine from the part number of the ESP module whether or not the vehicle is equipped with electronic EBA:

Diagnosis

In the event of a malfunction of the electronic EBA the ABS/ESP warning lamp comes on and remains continuously lit.

Diagnosis can only be performed using WDS via the ABS/ESP. No new diagnostic trouble codes are available for the electronic EBA .

The diagnosis and testing routine for the electronic EBA in accordance with the standard methods (static/dynamic diagnosis) described in TSB 9/2002 is NO LONGER applicable because of the changes to the design of the system.

Vehicle speed signal

The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) has no longer been fitted since the introduction of the MMT6 6-speed manual transmission (02.2003). The signal from the wheel speed sensors is transmitted by the ABS -control module via the CAN bus to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) . Here, the signal is processed and then sent on to the instrument cluster as the vehicle speed signal. Changes to the ABS control module were necessary in order to do this. As a result, there is now an additional CAN chip on the circuit board of the control module.
