Engine Cooling - Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding—2.0L Duratorq-Di/TDDi (Puma) Diesel/2.0L Duratorq-TDCi (Puma) Diesel/2.2L Duratorq-TDCi (Puma) Diesel Mondeo 2001 (10/2000-02/2007)
General Procedures

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:When releasing the cooling system pressure, cover the expansion tank cap with a thick cloth to prevent the possibility of scalding. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
    Release the cooling system pressure by slowly turning the coolant expansion tank cap a quarter of a turn.
  1. Remove the coolant expansion tank cap.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section  100-02 Jacking and Lifting.

  1. Drain the cooling system.
    • Allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.
  1. Install the radiator drain plug.
  1. Lower the vehicle.

  1. Loosen the water pump bleed valve.
  1. Fill the coolant expansion tank until coolant emerges from the water pump bleed valve.
  1. Tighten the water pump bleed valve.
  1. Fill the coolant expansion tank to the MAX mark.
  1. Start the engine and maintain the engine speed at 1500 revolutions per minute (RPM) for 20 seconds.
  1. Switch the engine off.
  1. Fill the coolant expansion tank to 15mm above the MAX mark.
  1. Install the coolant expansion tank cap.
  1. Start the engine, allow the engine to idle for a two minutes
  1. Raise the engine speed to 3000 RPM and maintain at 3000 RPM until the engine cooling fan operates.
  1. Allow the engine to idle for a further five minutes
  1. Allow the engine to cool.
  1. Remove the coolant expansion tank cap.
  1. Fill the coolant expansion tank to the MAX mark.
  1. Install the coolant expansion tank cap.
