Engine Oil - 5W-30
WSS-M2C912-A1
  1. Refer to: Valve Cover (303-01A Engine - 1.6L Duratec-16V Ti-VCT (Sigma), Removal and Installation).

  1. Special Tool(s): 303-499

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Only rotate the crankshaft clockwise.
Rotate the crankshaft until the corresponding piston is at TDC and then measure the valve clearance(s).
  1. Note down each cylinder number and the valve clearances measured.
  1. Compare the measured valve clearance(s) with the specifications.
    Refer to: Specifications (303-01A Engine - 1.6L Duratec-16V Ti-VCT (Sigma), Specifications).
NOTE:
NOTE:The following steps only need to be carried out if you are adjusting the valve clearance.
  1. Refer to: Camshafts (303-01A Engine - 1.6L Duratec-16V Ti-VCT (Sigma), Removal and Installation).
  1.
    • Remove the valve tappet and read the thickness from the underside.
    • The number on the valve tappet indicates the thickness of the bottom of the tappet. However, the number only indicates the digits after the decimal point (example: 725 = 2.725).
  1. Calculate the valve tappet thickness required (thickness of the currently installed tappet + the measured valve clearance - the required valve clearance).
  1. Install the correct valve tappet.

  1. CAUTION:
CAUTION:Make sure that the camshafts and camshaft bearing caps are installed in their original locations.
Apply clean engine oil to the surfaces of the bearings of the camshaft bearing caps.
    Material: Engine Oil - 5W-30
  1. Install the camshafts with the valves overlapping on number 4 cylinder.
  1.
    • Tighten the bolts evenly half a turn at a time until the camshaft bearing caps make contact with the cylinder head.
    • Bolts 1 to 16
      Torque: 7 Nm
    • Bolts 17 to 20
      Torque: 10 Nm
    • Bolts 1 to 16
      Torque: 45°
    • Bolts 17 & 19
      Torque: 70°
    • Bolts 18 & 20
      Torque: 53°
  1.
    • Turn the crankshaft back by 45° (counter to the normal direction of rotation).
    • Turn the camshafts to measure the valve clearance.
    • Measure the valve clearances and repeat this procedure as necessary until all valve clearances are within the specified tolerance.
    • Turn the crankshaft until it stops against the special tool.

  1. Special Tool(s): 303-499
    Torque: 15 Nm
  1. Refer to: Camshaft Seal (303-01A Engine - 1.6L Duratec-16V Ti-VCT (Sigma), Removal and Installation).
