Mustang V8-4.6L DOHC (1996)
Steering Wheel: Service and Repair
1. Center front wheels to straight-ahead position, then disconnect battery ground cable and wait one minute for air bag diagnostic monitor to deplete
its stored energy.
2. Remove two cover caps from steering wheel back cover to access driver side air bag module bolts.
3. Lift module off steering wheel and disconnect electrical connector, then remove module from steering wheel.
4. Disconnect horn and speed control wire harness from steering wheel.
5. Remove and discard steering wheel bolt.
6. Using steering wheel remover T67L-3600-A, or equivalent, remove steering wheel from steering column. Route air bag sliding contact assembly
wire harness through steering wheel as steering wheel is lifted off steering column.
CAUTION: Be sure control assembly wire harness does not get caught on steering wheel when lifting steering wheel off steering column, to
avoid damage to control assembly wire harness.
7. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Ensure air bag sliding contact wire is not pinched or air bag monitor will detect a fault.
b. Route air bag sliding contact assembly wire harness through steering wheel opening at three o'clock position.
c. Position steering wheel on steering column. Steering wheel and steering column gear input shaft coupling alignment marks should be aligned.
d. Torque steering wheel bolt to 22-33 ft lb.
e. Torque air bag module bolts to 36-47 in lb.
