Brake Master Cylinder: Service and Repair
Bleeding
WARNING: BRAKE FLUID CONTAINS POLYGLYCOL ETHERS AND POLYGLYCOLS. AVOID CONTACT WITH EYES. WASH
HANDS THOROUGHLY AFTER HANDLING. IF BRAKE FLUID CONTACTS EYES, FLUSH EYES WITH RUNNING WATER FOR 15
MINUTES. GET MEDICAL ATTENTION IF IRRITATION PERSISTS. IF TAKEN INTERNALLY, DRINK WATER AND INDUCE
VOMITING. GET MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY.
CAUTION:

Brake fluid is harmful to painted and plastic surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash it with water.

Use only bleed screws on engine side of brake master cylinder.

Hydro-booster bleed screw located near the dash on the hydro-booster casting is for the booster cavity filled with power steering fluid, not brake
fluid.
NOTES:

There are two additional bleed screws located on the inboard side of the brake master cylinder. Bleed these twice, once at the start of the bleed
cycle and again at the end of the cycle.

When any part of the hydraulic system has been disconnected for service, air may enter the system causing a spongy pedal action. Bleed the
component replaced system after it has been opened to make sure that all air is expelled.

When a new brake master cylinder has been installed or the brake system emptied or partially emptied, fluid may not flow from the wheel cylinder
bleeder screw during normal bleeding. It may be necessary to remove air from brake master cylinder using the following procedure.

Refer To Hydraulic System - Specifications for proper brake fluid requirements.
1. Locate the two bleed screws on the engine side of master cylinder.
2. Attach drain tube to bleed screw brake master cylinder closet to booster. Submerge end of drain tube in container partially filled with clear brake
fluid. Loosen bleed screw approximately three-quarters of a turn.
3. Have assistant push brake pedal down slowly through full travel, close outlet fitting, then return brake pedal slowly to full released position. Wait
five seconds; then repeat operation until air bubbles cease to appear.
4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for bleeder screw farthest from hydro-booster.
