Steering Wheel: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1. Center front wheels to the straight-ahead position.

WARNING:  THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DISCONNECTED BEFORE ANY AIR BAG COMPONENT IS SERVICED.
FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.

CAUTION:  Do not remove steering wheel and driver side air bag module as an assembly unless the column is locked or the steering column
shaft is secured to keep it from turning. This will avoid damage to the air bag sliding contact assembly.

2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Remove two steering wheel spoke covers from steering wheel back cover to access bolts.
4. Remove two bolts and lift driver side air bag module off steering wheel.
5. Disconnect wire harness from driver side air bag module and remove driver side air bag module from steering wheel.
6. Disconnect horn and speed control wire harness (if so equipped) from steering wheel.
7. Remove and discard steering wheel retaining bolt.

CAUTION:  Be sure air bag sliding contact wire harness does not get caught on steering wheel assembly when lifting steering wheel off steering
column, or damage to air bag sliding contact will result.

8. Remove steering wheel from shaft using Steering Wheel Puller T67L-3600-A. Route air bag sliding contact assembly wire harness through

steering wheel as steering wheel is lifted off of the lower steering column shaft.

INSTALLATION

1. Make sure front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.

CAUTION:  Be sure air bag sliding contact wire is not pinched or air bag monitor will detect a fault.

2. Route air bag sliding contact assembly wire harness through steering wheel opening at the three o'clock position and position steering wheel on

lower steering column shaft. The steering wheel and steering shaft alignment marks should be aligned.

3. Install new steering wheel retaining bolt and tighten to 31-45 Nm (23-33 ft. lbs.).
4. Connect speed control wire harness to steering wheel and snap connector assembly into steering wheel clip (if so equipped).

CAUTION:  Be sure wiring does not get trapped between steering wheel and air bag sliding contact assembly or air bag monitor will detect a
fault.

5. Connect air bag wire harness to driver side air bag module and install driver side air bag module to steering wheel. Tighten retaining bolts to 4-6

Nm (36-53 inch lbs.).

6. Connect positive battery cable and battery ground cable.
