NOISE/VIBRATION (2.8L) - MANAGED THERMACTOR AIR (MTA) TUBE CONTACTS FLOOR PANEL
LIGHT TRUCKS 1983 RANGER, 1984 BRONCO II
On 1983 Ranger and 1984 Bronco II vehicles (with 2.8L engine) built prior to June 10, 1983, the MTA tube may have been misassembled so that it
contacts the floor pan heat shield. This can result in a vibration/noise condition.
FIGURE 26
To eliminate an MTA tube ground-out vibration, perform the following procedure after exhaust system has cooled:
1.
Loosen the MTA tube connection to the Y-pipe assembly (Figure 26).
2.
Loosen the MTA tube connection to the catalyst (pry lightly to loosen the connection).
3.
Position the MTA tube 3/4"-1" away from the underbody heatshield.
4.
Tighten the MTA tube to Y-pipe connection 23-33 N-m (17-24 ft.lbs.), and tighten the MTA tube U-clamp to catalyst 7-11 N-m (5-8 ft.lbs.).
5.
Inspect the upper valve end of the MTA tube to verify clearance to the exhaust manifold is 1-1/2"-2". If necessary, reach in the front wheel well,
and carefully bend the tube outboard so that there will be 1-1/2"-2" clearance to the exhaust manifold (Figure 26).
