Alternator - Mounting Bracket Update
ALTERNATOR - MOUNTING BRACKET - REWORK REQUIRED FOR PRE-1990 VEHICLES WHEN REPLACING RIGHT CYLINDER HEAD
WITH 1990 LEVEL PART

LIGHT TRUCK:
1986-89 BRONCO II, RANGER
ISSUE:
The alternator mounting bracket for 1990 vehicles is different than those on pre-1990 vehicles. When 1990 level right cylinder heads are used
as service replacements for pre-1990 production vehicles, the existing alternator bracket and attaching bolts on the vehicle will not fit the new
cylinder head holes.
ACTION:
Install a 1990 level alternator mounting bracket or rework the existing bracket by enlarging the mounting holes in the bracket to
accommodate two 10 mm bolts. The 10 mm bolts are required for mounting the alternator bracket on the 1990 level cylinder head. Use one
of the following service procedures.

PROCEDURE "A" - NEW ALTERNATOR BRACKET
1.
Obtain a new alternator mounting bracket (E9TZ-10A313-B) and two 10 mm attaching bolts (N605800-S2).
2.
Remove the alternator from the old bracket. Refer to Section 14-02 of the appropriate model year Truck Shop Manual.
3.
Remove the existing alternator bracket. Throw it and the two smaller 8 mm bolts away.
4.
Install the new alternator bracket using two (2) new 10 mm attaching bolts, Figure 1. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 30-41 lb.ft. (40-55 N-m).
5.
Re-install the alternator.
PROCEDURE "B" - ALTERNATOR BRACKET REWORK
1.
Properly secure the existing alternator mounting bracket (with alternator removed) and enlarge two (2) clearance holes used to mount the bracket
to the front of the cylinder head, Figure 1.
2.
Drill out holes to 27/64 - 7/16 inches (10.7-11.2 mm).
3.
Install the new alternator bracket using two (2) new 10 mm attaching bolts, Figure 1. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 30-41 lb.ft. (40-55 N-m).
4.
Re-install the alternator. Refer to Section 14-02 of the appropriate model year Truck Shop Manual.
