LIGHT TRUCK:
1998 RANGER
ISSUE
1998 Rangers may exhibit erroneous Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) B1302 and B1398 when diagnostic testing is performed. This may be the result
of Generic Electronic Modules (GEMs) being installed on vehicles instead of Central Timer Modules (CTMs). Vehicles built without the premium
options package after 4/2/98 and manufactured at the Edison or Louisville Assembly Plants may contain a GEM in the place of a CTM.
ACTION
Ignore erroneous DTCs that relate to options packages not present on the vehicle and continue with normal diagnosis. Refer to the Service Tip
Information for details.
SERVICE TIP INFORMATION
If the vehicle does not have premium options such as "One-Touch-Down Power Windows" and diagnostic testing is performed, erroneous codes to this
option may be revealed and should be ignored as they are related to GEM features which are NOT present on these vehicles. The GEM should not be
replaced if these codes are present and the vehicle functions properly.
NOTE
IN PRODUCTION, GEMs ARE INSTALLED IN RANGERS WITH PREMIUM OPTION PACKAGES AND CTMs ARE INSTALLED IN
RANGERS WITHOUT PREMIUM OPTIONS. GEMs WILL REMAIN IN RANGER VEHICLES WITH PREMIUM OPTION PACKAGING IN
THE PLACE OF CTMs THROUGH THE REMAINING MODEL YEAR RANGERS (1998).
