Outside Door Handle - Excessive Lifting Effort

DOOR HANDLE - HIGH LIFT EFFORT - VEHICLES
BUILT THROUGH 11/15/1998

LIGHT TRUCK:
1998-99 RANGER

ISSUE
Lift effort is excessive on the driver and/or passenger outside door handle. This may be caused by the door opening rod binding/jamming on the handle's
stem which increases the lift effort substantially.

ACTION
Replace existing outside door handle with a revised outside door handle. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1.

Verify the door handle lift effort is excessive for either right and/or left hand side(s). It may be necessary to compare the handle lift effort to other
Ranger Trucks built after 11/15/1998 to determine excessive lift effort.

2.

To repair, remove the front door trim panel; refer to the appropriate year Ranger Service Manual, Section 501-05.

3.

Remove the watershield.

NOTE

THE FRONT DOOR WINDOW GLASS MUST BE COMPLETELY IN THE "UP" POSITION.

4.

Disconnect the front door latch-to-door handle rod.

5.

Drill out the two (2) rivets and remove the outside door handle (right/left or both).

6.

Replace existing door handle with new revised outside door handle.

NOTE

USE HANDLE XL5Z-1022404-BA FOR "BLACK COLORED HANDLES" ONLY, OR USE HANDLE XL5Z-1022404-DA FOR "ANY OTHER
COLOR EXCEPT BLACK." WHEN USING THIS HANDLE, PAINTING OF THE HANDLE(S) WILL BE REQUIRED WITH THE
RESPECTIVE COLOR OF THE OLD HANDLE SO IT WILL MATCH THE COLOR OF THE VEHICLE. REFERENCE THE PAINT CODE
FOUND ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE INSIDE DOOR JAMB REFERENCE STICKER. PRIOR TO PAINTING THE NEW DOOR HANDLE,
REFERENCE TSB 98-18-2.

NOTE

USE HEAVY-DUTY RIVETER 501-D011 OR EQUIVALENT TO SECURE THE RIVETS.
