Ranger 4WD L4-122 2.0L SOHC (1984)
Camshaft: Service and Repair
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system and remove air cleaner.
2.
Disconnect ignition wires and position aside.
3.
Disconnect any vacuum hoses interfering with camshaft removal.
4.
Remove rocker arm cover, then remove alternator belt.
5.
Remove alternator mounting bracket retaining bolts and position aside.
6.
Remove upper radiator hose, then remove fan shroud retaining bolts and fan shroud.
7.
Remove cam belt cover retaining bolts and cover.
8.
If vehicle is equipped with power steering, remove power steering pump bracket.
9.
Loosen idler cam retaining bolts, then position idler in the unloaded position and tighten retaining bolts.
10.
Remove timing belt from cam and auxiliary pulleys.
11.
Remove rocker arms as described under ``Rocker Arm Service,'' then remove gear and seal as described under ``Front Engine Seals, Replace.''
12.
Remove camshaft rear retainer.
13.
Raise and support vehicle.
14.
Remove right and left engine support bolts and nuts, then position a suitable transmission jack under engine.
15.
Place a block of wood on transmission jack, raise engine as high as possible and position blocks of wood between engine mounts and chassis
bracket, then remove jack.
16.
Carefully remove camshaft from front of head.
17.
Reverse procedure to install and note the following:
a. Ensure that threaded plug, if equipped, is positioned at rear of camshaft. If not, remove from old camshaft and install.
b. Coat camshaft lobes with grease DOAZ-19584-A or equivalent and lubricate journals with engine oil.
c. When installing timing belt, ensure timing marks are aligned as shown in Fig. 14.
