Shifter A/T: Service and Repair

WITH A4LD

REMOVAL 

1. Loosen trunnion bolt and remove trunnion from shift control arm grommet, being careful not to damage shifter lower arm.
2. Remove shifter handle by gripping handle firmly with shifter in D position and pull straight up.
3. Remove attaching screws, disconnect wiring connector, and remove bezel assembly, then the bolts retaining transfer case shift boot to housing, if

equipped.

4. Remove four (six on four wheel drive models) fasteners attaching selector housing to floor pan and remove selector housing.

INSTALLATION 

1. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

a. Install a new grommet in shifter lower arm prior to connecting trunnion.
b. Adjust manual linkage.
c. Place shift lever handle on selector lever then using a rubber mallet strike a sharp blow to center of shift handle. Handle is fully seated if

bottom of shift handle chrome ring is in line with lower character groove of selector lever.

NOTE:  If handle chrome ring is not aligned with selector lever lower character, handle is not completely seated on selector lever. Remove
and repeat procedure.
