Differential Case: Service and Repair
Model 28-2, 28-IFS & 35 IFS
Disassembly
1.
Place differential case in a suitable vise, then drive out lockpin that retains pinion mate shaft to case.
2.
Remove pinion mate shaft using a suitable drift, then rotate pinion mate gears and side gears until pinion mate gears turn to opening of case.
3.
Remove pinion mate gears and spherical washers behind gears, then lift out side gears and thrust washers.
4.
Inspect all parts and machined surfaces of case. If excessive wear is visible on all parts, it is suggested that complete differential case
assembly be replaced. If any one of gears is to be replaced, the gears must be replaced as a set.
Assembly
1.
Apply a suitable multi-purpose long-life lubricant to side gear thrust washers, hub, thrust face of side gears, pinion mate gears and spherical
washers.
2.
Hold side gears in place in case, then install pinion mate gears and spherical washers.
3.
Rotate side gears and pinion mate gears until holes in washers and pinion mate gears align with holes in case.
4.
Insert pinion mate shaft into case, ensuring lockpin hole in shaft aligns with lockpin holes in case.
5.
Insert lockpin, then peen some metal of case over pin to lock it into place.
