Removal and Installation
Remove

WARNING:

When the battery negative lead has been disconnected wait at least 15 minutes before proceeding to avoid the possibility of accidentally firing the air bag.

1. Disconnect the battery negative lead.

2. Raise the vehicle and remove the lower engine shield.

3. Remove the clamp plate bolt securing the flexible coupling to the steering column shaft.
   Rotate the clamp plate to disengage.
4. Lower the vehicle.
5. Remove the air bag module (refer to Operation Number 40 700 0).

6. Centralise the steering wheel and lock in position.

7. Remove the steering wheel.
1. Disconnect the clockspring/horn multiplug.
2. Remove the steering wheel retaining bolt.
• Turn ignition switch to position one to remove steering wheel and return to position 0 when removed.

8. Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds.
1. Remove the upper shroud.
2. Remove the lower shroud.

9. Remove the multifunction switches.
1. Remove the switch retaining screws.
2. Disconnect the switch multiplugs.
10. Remove the lower dash panel (refer to Operation Number 43 644 0).

11. Disconnect the multiplugs necessary to remove the steering column.
1. Disconnect the loom retaining clips.
2. Cut the loom cable tie.
3. Disconnect the ignition switch to loom multiplug.
4. Disconnect the clockspring multiplug.
5. Disconnect the air bag multiplug.
6. Disconnect the ignition switch multiplug.
12. Remove the clockspring (refer to Operation Number 33 392 0).

13. Remove the steering column.
1. Slacken the lower mounting nuts.
2. Remove the upper mounting bolts.

14. Remove the ignition switch barrel.
1. Turn the ignition switch to position one.
2. Press the release button.
3. Pull out the barrel.
Install
15. Refit the ignition switch barrel.

CAUTION:

Before refitting the steering column ensure that the steering is in the straight ahead position.

16. Refit the steering column.
1. Refit the upper mounting nuts.
2. Tighten the lower mounting nuts.
17. Refit the clockspring (refer to Operation Number 33 392 0).
18. Reconnect the steering column multiplugs.
19. Reconnect the loom retaining clips and refit a new cable tie.
20. Refit the lower dash panel (refer to Operation Number 43 644 0).
21. Refit the multifunction switches.
22. Refit the upper and lower steering column shrouds.

23. Refit the steering wheel.
• Turn the ignition switch to position one to refit the steering wheel and return to position 0 when refitted.
1. Refit the steering wheel retaining bolt.
2. Reconnect the clockspring/horn multiplug.
24. Refit the air bag module (refer to Operation Number 40 700 0).
25. Raise the vehicle.

26. Align the flexible coupling clamp plate over the steering column shaft and secure with a new bolt.
27. Refit the lower engine shield and lower the vehicle.
28. Reconnect the battery negative lead.
