Removal and Installation

Special Tool(s)

Removal

  1. Remove the parking brake control boot.

  1. Loosen the parking brake cable adjustment nut to the end of the parking brake cable thread.
  1. Remove the rear wheels and tires. For additional information, refer to: Wheel and Tire (204-04 Wheels and Tires, Removal and Installation).

  1. Disconnect the brake pipe union on both sides.
    1. Disconnect the brake pipe union and allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.
    1. Remove the pressure conscious reducing valve.
    1. Remove the brake pipe union retaining clip.
    1. Detach the brake pipe union from the bracket.

  1. Detach the wheel speed sensor from the brake backing plate on both sides (if equipped).

  1. Detach the wheel speed sensor wiring harness from the beam axle (if equipped).

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Mark the wheel hub and brake drum assembly to make sure that it is installed on the correct side.
    Remove the wheel hub and brake drum assembly on both sides.

  1. Detach the parking brake cable from the beam axle clip on both sides.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Secure the brake backing plate assembly to prevent damage to the parking brake cable.
    Detach the brake backing plate assembly from the beam axle on both sides.

  1. Using a suitable trolley jack, support the beam axle.

  1. Remove the shock absorber lower mounting bolt on both sides.

  1. Remove the beam axle mounting bracket retaining bolts on both sides.
  1. Lower and remove the beam axle.

  1. Remove the beam axle mounting bracket on both sides.

  1. Mark the beam axle bushing housing adjacent to the mark on the beam axle bushing.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Lubricate the shaft of the special tool with White grease.
    Using the special tools, remove the beam axle bushing on both sides.

Installation

NOTE:
NOTE:Final tightening of the rear suspension components must be carried out when the vehicle weight is on the road wheels.

  1. Mark the new beam axle bushing to aid installation.
    • Mark the beam axle bushing sleeve in line with the mark on the beam axle bushing.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Lubricate the shaft of the special tool and the new beam axle bushing with White grease.
    Install the beam axle bushing on both sides.
    • Align the mark on the beam axle bushing with the mark on the beam axle bushing housing.

  1. Install the beam axle mounting bracket on both sides.

  1. Using a suitable trolley jack, locate and support the beam axle.

  1. Install the beam axle mounting bracket retaining bolts on both sides.

  1. Install the shock absorber lower mounting bolt on both sides.

  1. Attach the brake backing plate assembly to the beam axle on both sides.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure that the wheel hub and brake drum assembly is installed on the correct side.
    Install the wheel hub and break drum assembly on both sides.

  1. Attach the wheel speed sensor wiring harness to the beam axle (if equipped).

  1. Attach the wheel speed sensor to the brake backing plate on both sides (if equipped).

  1. Connect the brake pipe union on both sides.
    1. Attach the brake pipe union to the bracket.
    1. Install the brake pipe union retaining clip.
    1. Install the pressure conscious reducing valve.
    1. Connect the brake pipe union.
  1. Install the rear wheels and tires. For additional information, refer to: Wheel and Tire (204-04 Wheels and Tires, Removal and Installation).
  1. Bleed the brake system. For additional information, refer to: (206-00 Brake System - General Information)

  1. Adjust the parking brake cable. For additional information, refer to: Parking Brake Cable Adjustment (206-05 Parking Brake and Actuation, General Procedures).
