Instrument Cluster - Instrument Cluster Streetka 2003.5 (01/2003-07/2005)
Description and Operation

The instrumentation for the Ka has been designed to be both simple and uncluttered.

The unique instrument panel has a large diameter centreline speedometer flanked by a fuel level gauge on the right with a group of warning lamps above. Total and trip odometers are set into the speedometer face.

The nine warning light positions indicate:

  • High beam
  • Brake failure warning/handbrake on
  • Ignition on
  • High engine temperature
  • Oil pressure failure
  • Direction indicators
  • Airbag system test
  • Catalyst malfunction
  • Safety belt warning light (Japan only)

The main controls are operated by two steering column stalks; lighting and indicators on the left, wipers on the right. A rotating thumbwheel for the headlamp levelling is adjacent to the steering column. Other switches are operated by a row of push buttons on the lower edge of the centre stack, two large ones for heated rear screen and rear fog light, and two smaller ones for blower and air conditioning (where fitted).

The fuel gauge is operated by a sender unit located in the fuel tank. The sender unit consists of a float and rheostat. The float is attached to a hinged arm which is connected to the rheostat moving contacts. As the float rises or falls according to the fuel level, the resistance varies and thus the voltage applied to the fuel gauge also varies to indicate the quantity of the fuel in the fuel tank.

Fuses and relays for the electrical systems are housed in either the central electrical box or the auxiliary electrical box.

WARNING:
WARNING:Any unauthorised alterations to the vehicles electrical or fuse system could have adverse effects on vehicle performance and constitutes a fire hazard. Failure to follow this instruction can result in personal injury.
WARNING:
WARNING:Switch off the ignition and all the electrical equipment before changing a fuse or relay. Failure to follow this instruction can result in personal injury.

Always replace a faulty fuse with a new one of the same rating.

The electrical boxes contain the main fuses and relays. The circuits protected are identified by numbers on the fuse box and additionally with symbols on the inside of the cover.

To check or replace a fuse or relay unlock the catches of the cover and lift it off. A blown fuse can be identified by a break in the wire. All fuses are a push fit. Use the fuse puller attached to the cover of the electrical box.
