Taurus V6-182 3.0L VIN 1 FI Flex Fuel (1997)
1. Measure distance between major (A-A) and minor (B-B) diameters of each cam lobe with a Vernier caliper and record readings. The difference in
readings is lobe lift.
2. If readings do not meet specification, replace camshaft.
End Play
CAUTION: Prying against the camshaft sprocket (6256) with the valve train load on the camshaft (6250) can break or damage the camshaft
sprocket. The rocker arm adjusting nuts must be backed off or the rocker arm seat bolt must be loosened sufficiently to free the camshaft. After
checking the camshaft end play, adjust the valve clearance.
1. Push camshaft toward rear of engine. Install Dial Indicator with Bracketry TOOL-4201-C or equivalent so indicator point is on camshaft sprocket
retaining bolt.
2. Zero the dial indicator. Pull camshaft forward and release it. Compare dial indicator reading with specifications. If end play is excessive, replace
camshaft thrust plate (6269).
3. After replacing camshaft thrust plate, check end play again. If it is still out of specified range, inspect camshaft and cylinder head and/or cylinder
block (6010) for excessive wear.
4. Remove dial indicator.
Oil Clearance
1. Measure the camshaft bearing inner diameter (ID) in the cylinder block and record.
2. If any cam bearing, ID is not 51.038-51.063 mm (2.0094-2.0104 inch). Replace bearing.
3. Measure the camshaft journal diameters and record.
4. If any journal is not 50.987-51.013 mm (2.0074-2.0084 inch) replace camshaft.
5. Subtract the camshaft bearing journal outer diameter from the cylinder bore inner diameter to obtain the oil clearance.
All: 0.025-0.076 mm (0.001-0.003 inch).
4. If the oil clearance exceeds the limit, replace the camshaft bearing and/or camshaft as required.
