HALFSHAFT DAMPERS (R.H.) - HIGH RUNOUT MISDIAGNOSED AS CAUSE OF NOISE/VIBRATION
FORD 1984 ALL TEMPO
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984 ALL TOPAZ
Halfshaft damper runout has been misdiagnosed as the cause of noise/vibration in the subject vehicles. This misdiagnosis has resulted in needless
halfshaft and/or component replacement. Halfshaft assemblies rarely, if ever, contribute to vibration disturbances due to their low rotational speeds
(approximately 1/3 that of rear wheel driveshaft speed).
FIGURE 9
Maximum runout specification of .25 inch has been established for the right hand halfshaft damper assembly and may be checked as indicated in Figure
9. Do not replace the inter-connecting shaft and damper assembly for a vibration concern unless damper runout exceeds .25 inches.
