Parking Brake Cable: Adjustments
Cable Tension
NOTE: This procedure requires the use of a brake cable tension tool.
CABLE ADJUSTMENT
1. Apply parking brake with 445 Nm (100 lb) foot pedal effort. Release parking brake control. Repeat application and release.
2. Place transmission in "NEUTRAL" (N). Raise and support vehicle so rear wheels are free to rotate.
3. With the parking brake control in the released position, the rear parking brake shoe and lining must not drag.
4. Check for movement of the parking brake rear cable and conduits from their conduits when the front parking brake cable and conduit is deflected
with a force of 45-65 N (10-15 lbs).
5. Grasp tensioner around housing. Using special tool, hook the end into the rounded end at clip between clip and housing. Unlock clip by pulling
downward with the tool while holding tensioner. Tensioner spring will take up cable slack and preload cables. While holding tensioner, lock the
clip by pushing up on bottom of clip. If clip does not slide up, move assembly slightly to align closest groove on adjuster rod to the clip.
6. Examine tensioner for remaining cable take-up capability. If none is present, check all cables parking brake control and brackets for possible
damage or deflection. Replace damaged parts and preset tension by using initial adjustment procedure. See:
7. Insert LH parking brake rear cable and conduit into black plastic front parking brake cable retainer which hangs under floorpan.
8. Snap retainer shut.
9. Turn rear wheels by hand to feel for the rear parking brake shoe and linings draging. If park brakes are dragging, perform adjustment again and
check for binding components.
10. Check for movement of the parking brake rear cable and conduits from their conduits when the front parking brake cable and conduit is deflected
with a force of 45-65 N (10-15 lbs). Cables should slide easily into and out of the conduits.
11. Lower vehicle and retest.
