Removal

Special Tool(s)

Spacer, Subframe

General Equipment
Transmission jack
Two M10 x 60 mm locating studs

Removal

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
    For additional information, refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, General Procedures).

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not loosen the ball joint flange bolts.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Shift the transmission into third gear.
    Remove the gearshift lever extension.
    • Pull up the boot.
    • Remove the gearshift lever extension.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
    For additional information, refer to: Lifting (100-02 Jacking and Lifting, Description and Operation).

  1. Remove the driveshaft front center bearing retaining bolts.
    • Discard the bolts.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Mark the position of the driveshaft flange in relation to the transmission output shaft flange.
    Detach the driveshaft from the transmission output shaft flange and position it to one side.
    • Discard the bolts.

  1. Disconnect the steering column flexible coupling from the steering gear pinion.
    1. Remove the nut.
    1. Remove the lower pinch bolt.
    • Detach the steering column shaft and position it to one side.
    • Discard the nut.

  1. Detach the power steering lines from the front axle crossmember.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Cap the clutch slave cylinder supply line to prevent fluid loss or dirt ingress.
    Disconnect the clutch slave cylinder supply line.
    • Remove the spring clip.

  1. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector.

  1. Disconnect the reversing lamp switch electrical connector.

  1. Remove the transmission support insulator to front axle crossmember bolts.

  1. Using a suitable transmission jack, support the front axle crossmember.
    • Support the engine under the oil pan with a wooden block.

  1. Lower the front axle crossmember (left-hand side shown).
    • Remove the nuts and bolts.

  1. Install the special tool.

  1. Remove the gearshift assembly.
    • Push the rubber insulator upwards.
    • Remove the bolts.
    • Discard the bolts.

  1. Detach the heat shield and disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor.

  1. Loosen the starter motor to transmission bolts by three turns.

  1. Remove one transmission retaining bolt from the right-hand side and one from the left-hand side.

  1. Remove the transmission right-hand side inner retaining bolts.

  1. Remove the transmission right-hand side retaining bolts.

  1. Remove the transmission left-hand side retaining bolts.

  1. Remove the transmission right-hand side retaining bolt.
  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not tilt the transmission during removal. This may cause damage to the pilot bearing.
    With the aid of another technician remove the transmission.

  1. Remove the insulator pad.
