Description and Operation

Fuel Tank Rollover Valves

Fuel tank ventilation is achieved by two fuel tank rollover valves. The fuel tank rollover valves are integral to the fuel tank and will prevent fuel loss from the fuel tank if the vehicle becomes inverted.

Hand Primer Pump— Vehicles with Diesel Engine

All vehicles without EGR and vehicles built up to 01/12/01, are fitted with a hand primer pump which is incorporated in the upper part of the fuel filter. The Hand primer is designed to aid bleeding the fuel system.

Fuel Lift Pump — Vehicles with 120 PS Diesel Engine

This is required because the higher fuel injection pump output requires increased fuel circulation to protect the fuel injection pump from overheating. With the ignition switch in the ON position, the fuel lift pump is switched on for a short time to build up fuel pressure. When the engine has been started the fuel lift pump will run continuously until the engine is stopped.

Water-In-Fuel Sensor — Vehicles with Diesel Engine (if equipped)

The fuel filter is also equipped with a water-in-fuel sensor which is located at the base of the fuel filter element. This sensor measures the amount of water which has collected in the fuel filter element. If the quantity of water present is greater than 90 ml then a warning indicator located on the instrument cluster is illuminated and the fuel filter element should then be drained of water.

Fuel Filter Minder — Vehicles with Diesel Engine

The fuel filter is equipped with a fuel filter minder which indicates the serviceability of the fuel filter element. The fuel filter minder is able to detect any restrictions present within the fuel system and indicate them by means of a yellow plunger and a series of marks on the body which indicate the severity of the restriction.
