Backing Plate: Service and Repair

WARNING:  Do not inhale dust from brakes, clutches or associated components. Inhalation of dust containing asbestos fibers can be injurious
to your health and could cause cancer or asbestosis. Compressed air or brushes must not be used to clean brakes, brake drums, clutches and
associated components. A vacuum cleaner equipped for this purpose should be carefully used to remove any dust. Adherent dust should be
removed with a damp rag. Any dust should be contained in a sealed and labeled bag for disposal. Wear an approved high efficiency cartridge
or air line respirator and use extra caution to avoid breathing this dust. Use non-asbestos replacement parts whenever possible.  

REMOVAL

1. Remove rear hub.
2. Remove rear wheel cylinder.
3. Remove wheel cylinder brake hose bracket bolt.
4. Remove rear brake antilock sensor wire bracket bolt and position rear brake antilock sensor wire out of the way.
5. Remove rear spring.

6. Remove and discard four brake backing plate-to-rear axle nuts.
7. Remove rear brake backing plate.

NOTE:  The rear wheel spindle is also secured by the brake backing plate-to-rear axle nuts and will come off with brake backing plate.

8. Remove and discard the brake backing plate-to-rear axle studs from rear brake backing plate. 

 
INSTALLATION

1. Install new brake backing plate-to-rear axle studs in rear brake backing plate.
2. Position rear brake backing plate and rear wheel spindle to rear axle and install four new brake backing plate-to-rear axle nuts. Tighten the rear

axle-to-rear axle nuts to 68-92 Nm (51-67 ft lb). 

3. Install rear spring.
4. Install rear brake antilock sensor wire bracket.
5. Install wheel cylinder brake hose bracket. Tighten wheel cylinder brake hose bracket bolt to 8-10 Nm (71-88 in lb).
6. Install rear wheel cylinder.
7. Install rear hub.
