EFE Heater: Description and Operation

EFE System

The EFE heats the incoming air/fuel charge to improve vaporization. This gives better performance on a cold drive-away.

The EFE heater has a ceramic ring. This ring, beneath the carburetor primary bore, is part of the carburetor insulator gasket.

The coolant temperature sensor is activated with the engine running. If the engine coolant temperature is below the specified value, the ECM will act to
supply current from the battery to the EFE heater relay coils, heating the air/fuel charge. The heater has a positive temperature coefficient (PTC)
semiconductor element. The resistance of this element will sharply increase as heater temperature reaches a prescribed level. This decreases battery
current and heater temperature. At high engine speeds, this will not occur because the high volume of air/fuel flow will prevent the heater temperature
from rising to the prescribed level. When the overall coolant temperature reaches a prescribed value, the ECM will cut "OFF" the current to the EFE
heater.
