Connecting Rod Bearing: Service and Repair

Rod bearings come in three standard sizes and two oversize, 0.0098 inch and 0.0196 inch. If after replacing rod bearing, thrust clearance is still
excessive, replace crankshaft. Connecting rod bearing cap nuts should be torqued in three steps to 36 ft. lbs. on 1.6L engine and 18 ft. lbs. plus 100° on
1.8L engine.
When replacing a main bearing, always replace it with one that has the same number. If you can not read number, refer to Figs. 30 & 31, for sizes of
main bearings. When servicing the crankshaft, inspect all journals for wear or damage. Install upper half of bearings into cylinder block, and the lower
half into main bearing caps. If oil clearance can not be brought within specifications using a standard bearing, regrind crankshaft for next oversize
bearing.
