Fluid - A/T: Service and Repair

The fluid should be drained, the fluid pan removed, the screen cleaned and fresh fluid added every 24,000 miles. For vehicles subjected to more severe
use such as frequent hot weather driving in heavy city traffic, prolonged periods of idling or towing this maintenance should be performed every 15,000
miles.

1. Raise vehicle, then remove drain plug and allow fluid to drain for at least five minutes.
2. If fluid screen is to be serviced, remove fluid pan bolts, fluid pan and gasket.
3. Remove fluid screen to valve body bolts, screen and gasket.
4. Thoroughly clean fluid screen and fluid pan with solvent.
5. Install fluid screen using a new gasket and tighten bolts to specifications, then install fluid pan using a new gasket and tighten attaching bolts to

specifications.

6. Add three quarts of fluid, then with engine idling and parking brake applied, move selector lever through each range and return selector lever to

PARK.

7. Check fluid level and add fluid as required to bring level between two dimples on dipstick.
8. When adding fluid to a dry transmission, proceed as follows:

a. Add 4.9 quarts of fluid.
b. With transmission in PARK and parking brake applied, start engine and let engine idle (carburetor off fast idle cam).
c. Move shifter lever through each range. Then, with transmission in PARK, add additional fluid as required to bring fluid level between two

dimples on dipstick.
