Fuel Pressure: Testing and Inspection

PROCEDURE:

1.

Remove the fuel filler cap to release the fuel vapor pressure in the fuel tank. Reinstall the fuel filler cap.

WARNING:  If the pressure in the fuel tank is not released prior to system service, the fuel in the tank may be forced out through the fuel hoses
due to the pressure during disconnection.

2.

Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF.

3.

Connect a fuel pressure gauge J 34730-1, or equivalent, with a fuel pressure gauge adapter J 37746, or equivalent, to the fuel filter inlet union bolt.

4.

START engine and allow it to warm up to a normal operating temperature.

5.

Measure the fuel pressure under the following conditions:
a.

With the fuel pump operating and the engine stopped, fuel pressure should be 2.4 - 2.8 kg/cm2 (34.1 - 39.8 psi).

b.

Within one minute after fuel pump operation is stopped. (Fuel pressure is reduced as time passes.) The system should maintain 1.5 kg/cm2
(21.3 psi).

c.

If measured pressures are not within specification, refer to DIAGNOSTIC CHARTS for diagnosis.

6.

Relieve fuel system pressure. Refer to FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF. Remove fuel pressure gauge and adapter.

7.

START engine and check for fuel leaks.
