Power Steering Pump: Component Tests and General Diagnostics
Fig. 1 Pressure gauge tester installation
1. Disconnect pressure hose from power steering pump and connect power steering pressure gauge J-5176-D. Ensure gauge valve is fully open.
2. Ensure fluid level is filled to Max. indicator.
3. Start engine and turn steering wheel from stop to stop until fluid is warmed up to 140°F.
4. Measure back pressure with steering wheel in straight ahead position. If back pressure is higher than 145 psi, inspect flow control valve, pressure
hoses and pipes for restrictions.
5. Measure relief pressure with steering wheel in straight ahead position. Close gauge valve gradually while observing pressure increase indicated by
gauge. If relief pressure is higher than 1140 psi. or lower than 850 psi. inspect relief pressure valve, pressure hoses and pipes for restrictions.
6. Open gauge valve fully and increase engine speed to 1500 RPM. Turn steering wheel from stop to stop. If pressure is lower than 850 psi.,inspect
spool valve for restrictions.
