Lifter / Lash Adjuster: Service and Repair
1. Remove rocker arm covers, rocker arm shaft, rocker arms and push rods. Refer to, Push Rod/Service and Repair. See: Push Rod/Service and
Repair
NOTE: Mark rocker arm assemblies and pushrods for reassembly reference.
2. Remove cylinder head. Refer to, Cylinder Head Assembly/Service and Repair. See: Cylinder Head Assembly
3. Remove lifter clamps and guide plates.
4. Using hydraulic lifter remover tool No. J-29834, or equivalent, remove hydraulic lifters. Keep hydraulic lifters organized, lifters must be
installed in bore from which they were removed.
5. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Prime new hydraulic lifters before installation by working the lifter plunger while submerged in clean kerosene or diesel fuel. New hydraulic
lifters must be primed prior to installation. Damage to the lifters may result if they are dry when engine is started.
b. Coat lifter roller and bearings with lubricant, part No. 1052365, or equivalent.
c. Install lifters in their original position.
d. After all clamps are installed and tightened to specification, turn crankshaft by hand two full turns, to ensure free movement of the lifters in the
guide plate. If engine will not turn over by hand, one or more of the lifters may be binding in the guide plate.
