Camshaft: Service and Repair
1.
Disconnect battery cables, then drain cooling system.
2.
Remove radiator, shrouds and fan.
3.
Remove grille and parking lamp assembly, then the hood latch and brace assembly.
4.
Remove oil pump drive.
5.
Remove power steering pump, alternator, air conditioning compressor and position aside.
6.
Remove rocker arm covers.
7.
Remove rocker arm assemblies and pushrods. Rocker arm assemblies and pushrods must be marked for proper assembly.
8.
Remove hydraulic lifters. Place lifters in a rack. The lifters must be installed in the same bore from which they were removed.
9.
Remove front cover as described previously.
10.
Remove timing chain and camshaft sprocket as described previously.
11.
If equipped w/lift type fuel pump, remove fuel pump.
12.
Remove front engine mount through bolts. When raising or supporting the engine for any reason, do not use a jack under the oil pan, any
sheet metal or crankshaft pulley. Due to the small clearance between the oil pan and oil pump screen, jacking against the oil pan may
cause it to be bent against the pump screen, resulting in a damaged oil pickup unit.

Raise and support engine.
14.
Remove air conditioning condenser mounting bolts, if equipped. Lift condenser from vehicle.
15.
Remove bolts and thrust plate.
16.
Remove camshaft. Pull camshaft from engine block carefully to avoid damage to camshaft bearings.
17.
Remove spacer, if necessary.
18.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. If a new camshaft is installed, the hydraulic lifters, engine oil and oil filter should be replaced.
b. Install spacer, with I.D. chamfer facing towards the camshaft.
c. Coat camshaft lobes with pre lube No. 1052365 or equivalent.
d. Tighten bolts to specifications.
e. When installing timing chain and sprockets, properly align timing marks.
