Camshaft: Service and Repair

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

CAUTION:  Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions. 

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. Raise the hood to the servicing position and secure it. Refer to Hood Replacement in Body and Frame.
3. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
4. Remove the upper and lower radiator hoses from the engine. 
5. Remove the air cleaner duct from the engine. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Powertrain Management.
6. Remove the A/C condenser mounting bolts, if equipped. Refer to Condenser Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
7. Remove the radiator support and radiator form vehicle. Refer to Radiator Support Replacement (General) in Body and Frame.
8. Remove the A/C pressure hose from the A/C compressor, if equipped, and set it aside. Refer to Compressor Hose Assembly Replacement in

Heating and Air Conditioning.

9. Remove the Cooling System fan. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Cooling System.

10. Remove the drive belt. 
11. Remove the A/C drive belt, if equipped. 
12. Remove the engine sight shield. 
13. Remove the electrical wiring harness from the thermostat housing.
14. Remove the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Cooling System.
15. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
16. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Starting and Charging.
17. Remove the right side close-out cover and bolt.
18. Remove the crankshaft balancer. 
19. Remove the engine oil pan. 
20. Remove the engine front cover. 
21. Remove the cylinder heads from the engine. 
22. Remove the valve lifters from the engine. 
23. Align the timing marks on the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets. Make sure that the number 1 piston is in the firing position.
24. Remove the camshaft sprocket.
