The 76 mm and 89 mm four-speed transmissions may develop a "stuck in gear" condition. This condition may be caused by the external shifter assembly
slipping into neutral. This happens because the 1-2 shift lever is chamfered, allowing the selector pin to slide past the lever into a neutral position while
the transmission remains in gear. An improved shifter has been released eliminating the chamfer on the 1-2 shift lever. The shifter may be used on past
models to replace worn or damaged shifter assemblies. VIN breakpoints of when the redesigned shifter was installed on 1985 vehicles and the shifter
part number for each model are as follows:
