Compressor Clutch: Service and Repair
Delco Air DA-6 & HR-6 Compressor
Removal
1.
Support compressor in holding fixture J-33026 or equivalent.
2.
Using clutch hub holding tool J-33027 or equivalent, prevent clutch hub and drive plate assembly from turning. Remove shaft nut using shaft nut
socket J-33022 or equivalent.
3.
Thread clutch plate and hub assembly removing tool J-33013 or equivalent onto hub with center screw forcing tip located to thrust against end of
shaft. Hold body of remover with wrench and turn center screw into remover body to remove clutch plate and hub assembly.
4.
Remove shaft key and retain for assembly.

Install shaft key into hub key groove, allowing key to project about 1/8 inch out of keyway. Shaft key is curved to provide interference fit.
2.
Ensure frictional surface of clutch plate and rotor are clean.
3.
Align shaft key with shaft keyway and place clutch plate and hub assembly on compressor shaft. Do not drive or pound on clutch hub of shaft,
as this may cause internal damage to compressor.
4.
Remove forcing tip from J-33013 remover/installer center screw and reverse body direction on center screw, Fig. 1.
5.
Install clutch plate and hub installer J-33013 or equivalent with bearing, Fig. 1. Body of installing tool should be backed off sufficiently to allow
center screw to be threaded fully onto end of compressor shaft.
6.
Hold center screw with wrench and tighten hex portion of installer J-33013 body to press hub onto shaft. Tighten body several turns, then remove
installer to check that shaft key is still in place in keyway. Reinstall installer and seat clutch plate and hub assembly in final position. Air gap
between frictional surfaces of clutch plate and clutch rotor should be .015-.025 inch.
7.
Remove installer and check for proper positioning of shaft key (even or slightly above clutch hub). Install shaft nut.
8.
Hold clutch plate and hub assembly with clutch hub holding tool J-33027, and using shaft nut socket J-33022, torque nut to 8-16 ft. lbs. against
crankshaft shoulder.
9.
Spin pulley by hand to check for free operation.
