Exhaust Manifold: Service and Repair

1.

Disconnect battery ground cable, then raise and support vehicle.

2.

On 1985 models, if removing right side manifold, proceed as follows:

a. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold, then lower vehicle.
b. Disconnect air management valve bracket and AIR hoses.
c. Disconnect AIR pipes from converter, cylinder head and manifold.
d. Disconnect spark plug wires, then remove exhaust manifold attaching bolts and manifold.

On 1986---87 models, if removing right side manifold, proceed as follows:

a. Remove air cleaner assembly.
b. Raise and support vehicle.
c. Remove exhaust pipe attaching bolts, then disconnect air pipe from left of block.
d. Lower vehicle, then disconnect fuel lines from AIR control bracket.
e. Disconnect converter AIR pipe from exhaust manifold.
f.

Disconnect spark plug wires from plugs and manifold retainer.

g. Disconnect AIR pipe from cylinder heads and manifold.
h. Disconnect AIR lines from converter and manifold check valve, then remove the check valve.
i.

Remove exhaust manifold attaching bolts and the manifold.

4.

On all models, if removing left side manifold, proceed as follows:

a. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold, then remove A/C compressor, if equipped, and position aside.
b. Remove power steering pump, if equipped, then the rear A/C compressor adjusting brace, if applicable.
c. If equipped, remove rear power steering pump adjusting brace.
d. Disconnect spark plug wires, then remove exhaust manifold attaching bolts and manifold.

5.

Reverse procedure to install, using new gasket.
