Power Steering Pump Speed Sensor: Testing and Inspection

Speed Sensor Testing

1.

Disconnect hose from speed sensor. Plug hose and sensor fitting.

2.

Start engine and allow to idle.

Power Assist Test

3.

Attach spring scale to the steering wheel. With engine idling and car on clean, dry floor pull scale. Note scale reading as soon as steering wheel
begins to turn.

Maximum Weight Specification:

4 pounds (18 N)

If maximum weight exceeds specification, check gearbox and power steering pump.

5.

If maximum weight is 4 pounds or less, replace speed sensor.
