Starter Motor: Testing and Inspection
Starter Performance Test
1. Disconnect the wires from the S terminal (A) and the M terminal (B).
2. Make a connection as described using as heavy a wire as possible (preferably equivalent to the wire used for the vehicle).
3. Connect the battery as shown. If the starter pinion pops out, it is working properly. To avoid damaging the starter, do not leave the battery
connected for more than 10 seconds.
4. Disconnect the battery from the M terminal. If the pinion does not retract, the hold-in coil is working properly. To avoid damaging the starter, do
not leave the battery connected for more than 10 seconds.
5. Disconnect the battery also from the body. If the pinion retracts immediately, it is working properly. To avoid damaging the starter, do not leave
the battery connected for more than 10 seconds.
6. Clamp the starter firmly in a vise.
7. Connect the starter to the battery as described in the diagram, and confirm that the motor starts and keeps rotating.
