About the Civic
The Civic has been made since 1972 and is one of the best-selling cars in history, with over 27 million sold by 2021. It made its name with the CVCC engine, which met the 1975 US emissions rules without a catalytic converter, and later became known for sporty versions such as the Si. It was the basis for the CRX, the first Prelude and the CR-V, and it is Honda's longest-running car name.
What these manuals cover
- 1982–1987 (second and third generations): CVCC three-valve fours of 1.3 and 1.5 litres, then the 1.5-litre D-series four, in hatchback, sedan and wagon form.
- 1988–1991 (fourth generation): the 1.5-litre four (D15B) with throttle-body injection, the Si's 1.6-litre (D16A6) and the 4WD wagon.
- 1992–1995 (fifth generation): 1.5-litre fours in 8-valve, 16-valve and VTEC-E form, and the Si's 1.6 VTEC.
- 1996–2000 (sixth generation): the 1.6-litre four in CX, DX, LX, EX (VTEC) and HX (VTEC-E) models, and the GX, the first natural-gas Civic.
- 2001–2005 (seventh generation): the 1.7-litre four, a CNG version and the 2.0-litre Si.
- 2006–2012: the 1.8-litre four, the 1.3-litre Hybrid and the 1.8 natural-gas model.
Tip: in the US the trim name tells you the engine. The DX and LX had plain SOHC engines, the EX a VTEC and the HX a VTEC-E economy engine.
