SYMPTOM
Repeated battery failure on cars used for short low speed trips during which there is a high electrical drain (A/C, headlights, and/or rear window defogger
are continuously on).
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Install the appropriate battery kit listed under Parts Information.
1.
Disconnect both battery cables and remove the retaining bracket.
2.
Choose the necessary battery kit as outlined in the Parts Information section.
Automatic Transmission Vehicles:
3.
Replace the alternator pulley and belt (see Section 25 of the 86/87 Service Manual), and the crankshaft pulley (see Section 6 of the 86/87 Service
Manual).
The new crankshaft pulley has 6 timing-related grooves, and each groove pertains to a specific model. To determine the correct groove on the new
pulley, use the old pulley as a guide (find the red mark), and mark the appropriate timing mark groove on the new pulley with a dab of red paint.
NOTE:
For alternator belt adjustment, see 25- 39 of the '86/87 Service Manual.
Manual and Automatic Transmission Vehicles:
4.
Install the redesigned rear window defogger switch and subcord from the battery kit.
5.
Slide the battery shield down over the battery, so the tabs are resting on top of the battery; then reconnect both battery cables, and install the
retaining bracket.
6.
Check the condition of the battery and make repairs if necessary, as indicated in Service Bulletin 88-023.
